Sheila Firestone
Sheila Firestone has been composing and studying music since 1987. A retired educator, Sheila was inspired to publish curriculum to engage children in activities through song and movement. She has published several CD recordings of her neo-classical compositions and a CD of meditation music called Peaceful Journeys. She was named The Teacher of Note by the Miami,Fl. Young Patronesses of the Opera in in 1996, for helping children create their own musical works. A choral piece, "Abraham Lincoln," appears in the National League of American Pen Women publication, Happy Birthday Mr. Lincoln, a commemorative collage. In 2010, she co-authored an article published in the Journal of the international alliance for women in music. The article concerns The Delian Society, a composer's group of which she is a member that is dedicated to the creation of new tonal music. In November of 2009, Variations Concertantes-a bassoon concerto collaboratively composed by members of the Delian Society, including Sheila- was premiered by The Octava Chamber Orchestra, in Seattle, Washington. This work is scheduled for additional performance and publication in France. She is cited in Dr. Anne Gray's The World of Women in Classical Music. Ancient Blue Threads is a collection of settings of liturgy and personal prayers with original music. These songs are inspirational pieces for Shabbat, or holidays such as Sukkot, and Chanukah. The Tallit of Sisterhood and Shechina are particularly appropriate songs for Temple Sisterhoods. Farloren was inspired by the Precious Legacy Exhibit, a collection of Jewish belongings confiscated by the Nazis and stored in warehouses. The collection supports the Jewish Museum in Prague. This is Sheila's first release of Jewish family oriented music, which includes a healing prayer, and a wedding song. You can find the lyrics for the original prayers at songsforanewday.com as well as other examples of her works at www.songsforanewday.com or on youtube.
