Ramon Tasat - News & Reviews
Ramon Tasat: "The Sephardic Balladeer"
George Robinson - Special To The Jewish Week
(09/03/2004)

This CD is the odd man out, first because it is not distributed by Hatikvah (although I'm sure Simon stocks it), but mainly because it is essentially an art song recital rather than folk or liturgical music, despite the title. Tasat has a lilting, powerful tenor with a lot of flexibility at both ends of the range, and his interpretations are fresh and warm. Pianist Natasha Jitomirskaia is an apt accompanist, and the arrangements are smart and offbeat. Very different from the music usually featured in my Sephardic column, but a gem. Available from www.arkivmusic.com.
