Chana Rothman
Chana Rothman uniquely fuses singer/songwriter folk mentality with progressive worldbeat in two languages. Like an eclectic Rickie Lee/Joni Mitchell, her politics, her obvious bohemianism, creative spirituality, and soulful vocals push her sound into a delicious left-of-center mix that also incorporates reggae and hip hop.

We Can Rise was released in 2007 by Oyhoo Records through Allegro Distribution. The Director at the label is Michael Dorf who founded the famed New York club, The Knitting Factory. Chana is a likely addition to Dorf's revered sensibility of avant-garde experimentation. This is a strong young woman -- a classically-trained Canadian living in Brooklyn -- who trekked around America, Italy, Israel and Nepal with a guitar strapped to her backpack...a pied piper of the Himalayas making friends from Kathmandu all the way back to the Lower East Side.

Chana continues to perform regularly around New York City and is now touring to promote her new release, packing such hotspots as Mercury Lounge, the Knitting Factory, World Café Live (Philadelphia) and the Bitter End.

The message is unity through music. Her poetry demands thought, and is provocatively accentuated with her genre crossing style. Clearly, Chana Rothman is an important new voice who cannot be ignored.
