Shalshelet: The Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music is a non-profit organization that seeks to foster the creation of original compositions and to expose wider audiences to innovations in Jewish religious music. Its mission is to use music to build bridges both within and outside the Jewish community. Shalshelet solicits, collects, publishes, and disseminates new compositions without regard to the professional or lay status of composers, who are drawn from across all Jewish denominations—Reform, Conservative, modern Orthodox, Reconstructionist, Havurah, affiliated, and unaffiliated. Since Shalshelet’s First International Festival in 2004, more than 1,200 new musical compositions have been submitted—from people from all over the world, including Argentina, Australia, Chile, Canada, Israel, Switzerland, Uganda, the United Kingdom and the United States. Shalshelet’s International Festivals honor excellence in new liturgical composition. Festivals and related events held throughout the year are supplemented by songbooks and CDs which allow composers to share their music with individuals and congregations across the nation and around the world. At www.Shalshelet.org, find more information about Shalshelet's activities, and read biographies of the composers whose work is featured in Shalshelet Songbooks.
