Ilene Safyan
Whether in her role as cantor, teacher, performer or composer, Ilene Safyan weaves the multicultural musical strands of the Jewish experience into a harmonic tapestry of sound. She has shared her music in communities throughout the US, Canada and Latin America. Her original piece, "P'tach Lanu Sha'ar," was one of the finalists selected in the 4th Shalshelet International Festival of New Jewish Music in 2010. Her six CDs of Jewish music, (recorded with singing partner, Margie Rosenthal) have been recognized by such publications as Entertainment Weekly, the American Library Association and Parents' Guide to Childrens' Media. Parents' Choice Magazine awarded her recording Just in Time for Chanukah! the Gold Medal for excellence in childrens' recordings; Where Dreams are Born was awarded the Silver Medal. Her music has been featured on XM radio's Hanukkah station, Children's Media Network, WQXR, CBS and NPR and is included in the Dartmouth and Florida Atlantic University Jewish Sound Archives. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, she currently lives with her family in Portland, OR, where she is Music Coordinator and at Havurah Shalom and and serves as cantorial soloist at Congregations Neveh Shalom and Havurah Shalom.

Ilene and Margie started recording music in 1987. They began their recording career began because they believed music to be one of the best ways to teach children, to ground them, to give them a love of their heritage. Their friendship and musical partnership continues to this day.
