Cantor Elana Rozenfeld
During Shabbat services at Temple Israel Center in White Plains, NY, Elana listened intently to the sweet sounds of chazzanut chanted by Cantor Jacob Ben Zion Mendelson, who, unsuspecting, planted the seed that blossomed into her cantorial career. In 2004 Elana received her BFA in theatre at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. As she approached graduation Elana decided to follow her childhood dream to become a cantor, and enrolled in the Jewish Theological Seminary where she earned a Masters of Sacred Music. As a student, Elana served three years as part-time cantor of Temple Beth El Mekor Chayim in Cranford New Jersey. Upon graduation in 2009, she moved to Manhattan's Upper East Side to serve for two years as cantor of Park Avenue Synagogue. In November of that year, Elana married Raphael Rozenfeld. They have two children, Ariel and Carmel. During her years of study and throughout the beginning of her cantorial career, Elana developed a passion for the Hebrew, Yiddish, and Ladino languages, particularly as they are used in Jewish music to express the emotional and spiritual complexity of our people. Elana has been the cantor of Congregation Shirat Hayam since July of 2011 and has loved every minute of it!
